How Do I Clean Wood Flooring?

A common question we face is, “What is the best way to clean wood flooring?”.

While there are many different cleaning solutions and tools to choose from, those options may not be the best to clean wood floors. You want to achieve clean, streak-free floors while protecting and preserving them.

Here are some of the best options for cleaning different types of wood flooring:

Solid Prefinished WoodWhen it comes to mopping if you want to use a cleaning product, make sure to use a product specifically for hardwood flooring and follow label instructions.

Engineered Hardwood FloorsThe type of cleaning product used to mop is the same as with the solid prefinished wood. Make sure it is a product specifically designed for wood flooring. Steam mops and products for vinyl or laminate flooring can damage your wood floors. Hardwood floor cleaners like Bona or Simple Green Multi-Surface Floor Care are a few good options.

Luxury Vinyl PlankWhen mopping, be sure to use a mild detergent. There are several commercial options available, but a liquid dish soap like Dawn can help remove some of the tougher dirt and grime build-up in places like the kitchen. If you choose to go this route, though, make sure to only use a drop or two. If you use too much it can leave a film on the floors.

If there is a film or the floors feel sticky after mopping, you can do a quick rinse with a water/distilled white vinegar solution. It is important not to use vinegar regularly, though, as it can damage the floor finish.

Unfinished WoodFor mopping, there are several options available. You can use vinegar(this option is not recommended for regular cleaning), TSP, or mineral spirits. There are commercial wood floor cleaners available, but with unfinished wood flooring, there is a higher risk of them being damaged by harsh chemicals.

Here are some tips that you should keep in mind when it comes to any type of wood flooring:

  • Dust/sweep/vacuum your floors with a microfiber mop or soft bristle broom regularly! If dirt is left on the floor, it can potentially scratch them.
  • When mopping with warm water, make sure that the mop is damp and not wet. Also, make sure the water is warm and not hot. Standing water can soak in and damage the floors and hot water can discolor them.
  • Placing mats in high-traffic areas can help to prevent damage in those areas and preserve the appearance and durability of the floors. Unbacked mats are preferred because some backing will stain the floor.
  • Exercise caution when moving heavy objects on your floors such as furniture. There are several commercial options for furniture pads that you can place on the bottom of your appliances/furniture to prevent damage to your floor when moving them.
  • In areas that receive direct sunlight, close the blinds/curtains when it gets too extreme. Heat and sunlight can discolor the floors.
  • Move your furniture periodically so the floor wears evenly.
  • CLEAN SPILLS IMMEDIATELY. As we said, standing liquids can damage the floors.
  • Think on your feet. Certain types of shoes can cause damage to your floors, such as high heels and cleats.

Maintaining your wood floors is extremely important. Not only is it important for appearance, but also longevity.
